Our Guiding Lights: Dale’s Story
Dale, Mary, and Leah in 2024
In healthcare, there are moments that stay with you long after a shift ends or a chapter closes. Often, they are not about medications or scans, but about connection. About listening. About understanding what truly brings comfort and meaning to someone’s life.
Through those moments, certain people shape how you see care and compassion moving forward. Dale is one of those people, and we are honored to share his story, alongside Mary and Leah, as one of Sunny’s Helping Paws’ guiding lights.
A Relationship Built on Trust
Dale was one of Nora’s patients, and through that relationship, a deep sense of trust and mutual respect grew. Like many people navigating serious illness, pets were often part of their conversations. Nora has seen throughout her healthcare career how much animals bring comfort, and companionship, especially during challenging times.
Nora’s conversations with Dale stayed with her. They reflected something she knew deeply, that pets are not just part of the household, they are part of how people cope, heal, and find steadiness in uncertain times.
The Right Time for Leah
In December 2023, Dale and his wife Mary began looking for a dog. They were unsure if the timing was right, given everything else they were facing. Dale decided that if his scan in January went well, he would welcome another dog into their lives.
At an appointment in January 2024, after receiving good news, Nora encouraged him to do just that. Two days later, on January 17, Dale and Mary brought home Leah. She had not yet been spoken for when they first visited a month earlier, and it felt like the right moment.
Leah carried meaning in other ways, too. She was born on November 1, 2023, the anniversary of Dale and Mary’s wedding. “She was meant for us,” Mary shared.
A Year That Mattered
Over the year that followed, Leah became a central part of Dale’s life. She brought him joy, companionship, comfort, and purpose during a year that mattered deeply. He doted on her, cared for her, and loved every minute of the time they had together.
Dale passed away on January 27, 2025.
Mary has since shared how grateful she was that Dale got to enjoy that year with Leah, and has thanked Nora for her encouragement that helped make it possible.
Now, on getting to enjoy Leah’s company herself, Mary says that Leah is pretty sweet and that she’d be “pretty lonesome without her.”
Carrying Dale’s Story Forward
In the spring of 2025, Nora and her two dogs, Sunny and Ash, joined Mary and Leah at a Lymphoma Research Foundation fundraising walk. It was a moment of shared support, with people and pets walking together in honor of connection, care, and love.
Stories like Dale’s are part of what inspired Nora to start Sunny’s Helping Paws. Again and again, she witnessed how deeply people worry about their pets during medical treatment, and how much peace of mind comes from knowing they are safe and cared for.
Sunny’s Helping Paws exists to protect that bond. Our mission is to support pets so their people can focus on healing, without the added burden of worrying about the animals they love.
We are grateful to Mary for allowing us to share this story and to honor Dale as one of our guiding lights. His story is a reminder of the comfort pets bring and the power of showing up for one another, one moment at a time.
